Frequently asked questions

What is the IRS mileage rate for 2026?

72.5¢ per business mile for travel from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76¢ per mile from July 1, 2026, after the IRS's mid-year increase for higher fuel costs.

Can I deduct mileage and gas?

Not both. If you use the standard mileage rate for a vehicle, it replaces actual costs like gas, repairs and depreciation. Business parking and tolls can be deducted on top.

What records do I need?

For each trip: the date, business purpose, destination and miles, written at or near the time of the trip. Also keep each vehicle's total miles for the year.

Does commuting count?

No. Driving between your home and a regular workplace is commuting. Trips from a home office to clients, job sites or suppliers generally count as business.
